A FINE OGLALA TETON SIOUX MAN’S QUILLED VEST A wonderful Oglalla Teton Sioux quilled Vest 17” x 20” – 43cm x 51cm, Fine Condition Allen M.S. Wedding date is recorded, in quill dated March 16 1905 The attached label corresponds with Rathbun’s old inventory list, Heritage Auction Certificate. Field collected by Nellie (Rathbun) Woodard and her son Charles Raymond who operated a “Dry Goods” store and Indian Trading Post in Chadron, Nebraska, near the South Dakota border, beginning in the late 1880s. The young and handsome Raymond wore his hair long until age 17 in solidarity with his native friends. He was a lifelong friend of the famous Oglala Teton Sioux Chief Red Cloud (1822–1909). The complete collection remained unpacked until 1940, after which each piece was left untouched and in its original condition! This collection was finally sold at the Heritage Auction in Dallas, Texas, through Raymond’s grandson, Paul Rathbun. The great collection which Nellie and Raymond accumulated over the years was inherited by Raymond’s son Speed and later by his grandson Paul.
