To see Netflix, produce something as weird and ambitious as The Dark Crystal series and now they are putting their All I need is Svedka Vodka and my dog Grinch christmas shirt in Bone is just amazing. I’m just over the moon for this- I am just so incredibly hyped. I’m gonna binge the whole thing in one glorious day when it comes out. I couldn’t be happier. I’ll always love Bone. Wow this series hurts so much. Wow- it’s just Earth shattering. I really like how adult animation has been treated in the last few years. I’d like to thank shows like Bojack Horseman for showing adult animation doesn’t always have to be comedic or schlocky but can also prove to be meaningful and a reflection of ourselves along the way. Gendy Tartavosky is done with Hotel Transylvania garbage and is now making real genuine artful cartoons again and I just love it. I started to get into Samurai Jack recently and I’ve realized just what a brilliant cartoon that was and why Tartavosky is so beloved in the animation world. So when I heard Gendy was making a new adult swim cartoon about a caveman and his dinosaur and the trails they face in nature, I got really hyped. If you’ve followed my page long enough, you probably know I’m a sucker for anything monsters or movie creatures. By episode one, this show had me in its grasp and it could not let go. The opening ten minutes of this film is the harshest opening to anything I’ve seen since Finding Nemo. Scratch that- let’s just say this opening hurt worse than that in more ways than one. Primal is a brutal experience and an uncompromising one at that. The brilliant thing about this cartoon is the fact that it is all told visually. There is not a single word of dialogue in the show and they pull this off brilliant. There is so much nuance in this series. All you need is the staging of a scene or the expression of a characters face to portray so many volumes. Besides the last episode, there’s no real villain in this series but nature itself. This show can be summed up in one way, “everybody’s gotta eat.” It shows survival of the fittest in its most honest and brutal way. It will make you appreciate what you have so much more. This is one of the most gorgeously animated shows I’ve ever seen. All the environments are just so lush and the character animation has so much raw truth behind it. It really does take these storyboards to life in a jaw dropping way. Brian Tyler did the score here and it feels like heavy metal. I feel like some elements here could have maybe been fleshed out a little bit more and explored a bit more. Also, the ending while powerful still just BROKE me.
